How to get the most out of your newborn baby photography experience

If you are reading this you may never have hired a newborn photographer before. Consequently you may have lots of questions about what’s involved.

And you’re likely to also be facing the hard decision of choosing a photographer to work with.

Naturally, you may want to know what makes Bundles of Joy Photography different from the rest.

So here I wanted to:

  • explain how you can prepare for your upcoming newborn baby photoshoot
  • share with you my top tips for getting the most out of your newborn baby photography experience
  • and reveal to what extent you need to be involved on the day of the shoot, as we work to capture those gorgeous baby pictures that you desire.

Book as early as possible

Booking your newborn baby photoshoot is something that I would recommend you do as early as possible in your pregnancy.

Based on your expected due date, we can pencil in a provisional date for your session and then nearer the time of the birth we can reschedule as necessary. We’ll confirm your booking and you can rest up, safe in the knowledge that you slot is secured.

Please, please heed this advice and don’t presume that I will have availability when your baby has been born. While I aim to be flexible, it is not always possible to accommodate late bookings and I hate disappointing people who have had their heart set on getting their baby pictures done by me. Remember, babies must be under three weeks of age so be sure to book your slot!

Baby has arrived?

Fantastic, huge congratulations! Sue and I can’t wait to meet your new bundle of joy!

At this point, please be sure to contact us to confirm the wonderful news and to reschedule your appointment if necessary.  I cannot stress enough how important this is.

If you’re too busy with baby to contact us, mums and dads, please delegate this job to someone else.

We work with babies up to three weeks old and it’s really important to us that we can get you in for your session.

If you don’t keep us informed of early or late arrivals, we may not be able to juggle other commitments in our diaries at the last minute to fit you in within this important timeframe.

We realise that babies don’t often show up on time, so we aim to be flexible when it comes to rebooking. The key step though is to get that booking made to secure your slot, as we really dislike turning people away.

Before you photo session

Please spend some time looking at my newborn photography gallery on my website to see if there are any particular baby pictures that you would like me to create.

I usually allow up to six hours for a photoshoot and in that time we should be able to try a number of different poses and setups.

By letting me know in advance of your shoot if you have something specific in mind, I can be sure to have it planned into your session.

Bring props (if you wish)

Do not be afraid to bring personal props along.

I love it when a family wants a photo of baby with something that is sentimental to them, whether that be a guitar, a motorcycle helmet, or a pair of skis!

Similarly, if there is an overall theme relevant to you and your family, I can aim to incorporate this into the baby photos. For example, recently I setup this shot...

... because mum and dad were dairy farmers.

Suffice to say, the parents loved it!

Please arrive on time

In order to get the most out of your session, please arrive approx. 10 minutes ahead of your booking time, and allow more than enough time for the journey to us.

By arriving promptly I can get started on your photoshoot as early as possible and you can get the most value out of the session.

As each baby pose takes up to an hour to setup, arriving late could have a huge impact on how many shots I get of your newborn in the available time.

We’ll send you our full address ahead of your photoshoot. Please also visit our Contact page for a map and our contact numbers and email.

If you ARE running late, please call and let us know.

Sit back and relax

So, will you need to be involved in the photoshoot? The simple answer is no. Between us, Sue and I have it covered. Other than feeding and occasional nappy changing, there really is very little for you to do!

Unlike other newborn photographers who work alone, I always work with Sue, who provides crucial support to the baby during posing and photographing.

We strive to make you feel at home, and our past clients have said they love our homely setting and comfortable sofas.

We actually love nothing more than if a parent feels so relaxed with us that they have a brief snooze – honestly, it has happened before!

We will get on with the settling and positioning of your baby, and once we have the shot we are after will move onto another setup.

Rest assured, we are safety trained and have worked with literally hundreds of babies. We will handle your baby with the upmost care.

We’ll aim to get as many photos as possible for you to choose from. Then you will be invited back to a viewing session, held a couple of weeks after the photoshoot to see the results!

So, that’s it for now! I hope it’s been useful?

Please now just do one more thing. Take a moment to view our video below which will show you what it’s like inside our photography studio.

And of course, please contact us if you have any further questions - we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Until next time, thanks for reading!
