Three reasons why I don’t offer Christmas family photoshoots

With the festive season fast approaching, it’s a popular time of year for parents across the country to be booking themselves in for Christmas family photoshoots.

After all, family photos make great Christmas gifts; either as prints or mounted in a frame. Or as a piece of artwork destined to be hung on the walls.

But, here at Bundles of Joy Photography, I choose NOT to offer Christmas family photoshoots. Curious to know why? Read on!

Why Christmas family photoshoots aren’t for me!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate why you might consider a Christmas family photoshoot.

Just like you, I enjoy looking at family portraits.

If they’ve been taken during happy family times, looking back at the photos can bring back lots of lovely memories. And you can realise how much young children have grown in the time since the photo was taken (which is always a little bit mind-blowing!)

And, I also enjoy taking family photos. I really do!

But, for me, on a professional basis anyway, Christmas family photoshoots are definitely a no-no!

The Bundles of Joy difference

I see lots of photographers at this time of year offering a quick, cheap photo session and a handful of digital images on a USB stick for less than £100.

A ‘stack them high, let them fly’, bums-on-seats type approach.

That type of service just isn’t the kind of work I enjoy doing.

Instead, here at Bundles of Joy Photography, we do things a little differently!

1.       As a newborn photography specialist, I focus on the baby

You see, I learnt very quickly after setting up my photography business that there is no benefit to trying to be a ‘jack of all trades’.

I’ve found success in sticking to the formula of offering a high quality, premium newborn photography experience which offers my ideal clients exactly what they are looking for.

As such, any family pictures that I capture for clients are part of my signature newborn photography service.

I don’t offer separate family photoshoots because the focus in my work is on the baby.

The ‘family’ portraits I take are done to complete the portfolio of images I take in a typical newborn session, and usually only involve the parents or the sibling(s) of the baby or both.

I aim to capture the close bond between a parent and their newborn baby; a mother and newborn son, father and newborn daughter. Whatever the combination, these are intimate and special family photos.

I love photographing newborn babies with their siblings

Some of the examples I include here (and see more in my gallery) are among my favourites.

2.       Timeless newborn portraits

What also makes us different is that we offer timeless newborn portraits which are pieces of art in their own right. Unlike novelty portraits taken during a typical Christmas family photoshoot.

Our images remain relevant and beautiful to look at as the months and years go by.

And yes, while they’re more expensive, our happy clients agree with us that they’re worth the investment because of the years and years of enjoyment that can be had from them.

And, if you invest wisely in quality printed products, they’ll be durable too! Professionally printed portraits – such as the ones I source from my suppliers – retain their vibrancy and colour for years and years. Far longer than a photo printed at your nearest supermarket would.

3.       A passion for newborn photography

Finally, I specialise in newborn photography because I love what I do and am extremely passionate about it. Not because it’s the latest craze or way to make a quick buck!

In fact, I have been a specialist in newborn photography now for four years and have worked with hundreds, if not thousands, of newborn babies!

Why-Christmas-family-photoshoots-arent-for-me.jpg

My assistant (and mum) Sue and I welcome our clients into our cosy home-based studio here in Froggatt in the Peak District, and we believe that we offer something really quite special.

I offer limited sessions each month and am dedicated to offering an exceptional experience to my clients.

Come and try it out for yourself!

We’re now taking bookings for Spring/Summer 2018 babies. Please get in touch as soon as possible to book your preferred session date and time.

Three places to visit in the Peak District

If you didn’t already know, the Bundles of Joy Photography HQ is in Froggatt, in Hope Valley (see the map on our Contact page for our exact location).

It’s a beautiful part of the U.K. and there are loads of places to visit in the Peak District.

It’s the perfect place to get out and about in the great outdoors, since there’s so much to do, like riding, cycling and walking. Or it's equally great if you’re after a beautiful location and a spot of low-intensity sight-seeing.

Personally, I just love living and working here.

The Peak District is stunningly beautiful all year round. So, if you’ve never made a trip here, I highly recommend you get it on your 2018 to-do list!

Travelling to the Peak District?

Many of our newborn portrait photography clients, who aren’t from the local area, choose to make their trip up to us and then spend some time here.

A sort of mini holiday or ‘baby moon’.

And because they’re new to the area, they’re often asking me and my assistant Sue (who’s my mum by the way) where they should visit.

So, with this in mind, I wanted to list a few of the not-to-be-missed attractions in the Peak District in case this is also useful to you.

Why not plan a ‘baby moon’ in the Peak District?

Perhaps you’re considering booking your newborn photoshoot with us and are out of the area?

Well, if so, why not do as many of my other clients do? Make the trip here part of a short break and see the very best of what the area has to offer?

Make it an overnight stop or stay for a few days – whatever suits you best.

If you’re first time parents, with a new baby in tow, it will be your first family holiday. And a great way to start your new life as a family of three!

The clean fresh air will do the baby a lot of good, and you can enjoy yourself altogether, away without the constant visits from friends and relatives.

And you can eat out or get a takeaway – no need to wash up or clean the house – sounds perfect to me!

My top three places to visit in the Peak District

If you do decide to explore the local area when you visit me for your newborn photoshoot, here are my recommendations for places to visit in the Peak District:

1.       Chatsworth House

Chatsworth House is a lavish stately home in Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 1PP. It has 30 rooms for you to explore as well as 105 acres of stunning gardens, and a farmyard and adventure playground. Definitely on the must-visit list if you're coming to this area!

To find out more visit https://www.chatsworth.org/

2.       Froggatt & Curber Edge

The Froggatt and Curber Edge walk is a circular route through a beautiful part of the Peak District, which returns along the River Derwent. If you like walking, don’t miss this!

3.       Bakewell

Bakewell is a small market town, made famous by the delicious Bakewell pudding that originates from here. Be sure to try one and take some home with you when you visit!

Bakewell is located alongside the River Wye and is full of beautiful traditional stone buildings. If you’re visiting on a Monday don’t miss the markets in the town centre, which includes a livestock market.

And since all that sight-seeing is likely to be thirsty work, I thought I’d also list a couple of my favourite watering holes!

1.       Public House: The Moon Inn in Stony Middleton

The Moon Inn is a traditional country pub, surrounded by the stunning countryside of the Peak District. And one of my favourites in the area.

It serves locally-sourced home-cooked food, fine wines, real ales and over 50 specialist gins! As well as being a pub, there are also five luxury en-suite rooms, so it’s a good option for an overnight stay too.

To find out more visit https://www.themooninn.com

2.       Public House: The Devonshire Arms in Baslow

This is another great pub which also has 11 rooms so could accommodate you overnight. It’s located on the doorstep of Chatsworth House and serves great food.

To find out more visit http://www.devonshirearmsbaslow.co.uk/

So, I hope that’s useful!

And if you do decide to make a trip to the local area after your newborn photoshoot, be sure to ask Sue and I for more tips when you get here.

There are too many beautiful places to list, but we’d be more than happy to point you in the right direction if you’re after an unforgettable first family holiday!

“Georgina and her mum welcomed us to their beautiful home. We were looked after so well. However.... the most important aspect of our visit was the photos of our baby, Millie. The caring and sensitive manner in which they looked after Millie (3 weeks old) whilst taking an abundance of AMAZING photos! WOW! We can't wait to see the results. Georgina has won some very significant awards and I'm not at all surprised! We're going back to view the results soon but we are very confident that they will be amazing. This young lady is exceptional! In a class of her own.”

“It's difficult to some up in a few words how magical the experience at Bundles of Joy was...every part of the process was such fun. I was also lucky enough to get a sneak peak behind the scenes and watching George at work was fantastic to see. She’s a true professional and inspiring. I felt Noah was in the safest of hands and I didn't hold back in asking her to be a potential babysitter in the future!!  Thanks George and Sue.”

“I can't recommend Georgina highly enough. The day when Albert had his photos taken I was so relaxed to leave him with Georgina and Sue that I had a little nap! When we returned to view the photos both my Mum and I got tears in our eyes at how beautiful the pictures were and how lovely the whole experience is made. I am so pleased we had the photographs done to remember our little boy during such a special time and I couldn't chose between all the gorgeous images so had to have them all!”

Nicki Hutchinson – Reviewed Bundles of Joy Photography as 5 stars, 20/04/2016

“My little boy is almost two and I still enjoy the pictures daily ..from my canvas in my living room to the screen saver on my phone (and of course my cover picture on Facebook) As well as having the beautiful album to get out and go through from time to time. I cannot recommend Georgina enough! The whole experience of the shoot was so lovingly done. We were made to feel so comfortable and at home ..which meant a lot as it was my first time out of the house after my c-section. Cole was so carefully positioned that we could sit and relax with a cuppa knowing he was in good hands.”

“We had the best experience with Georgina and Sue. I went from being really worried about leaving Grayson to being totally relaxed within minutes of meeting them both. We were able to watch and hear the photos being taken. Having the time to just sit and relax with my husband was amazing while being looked after with yummy coffees and treats. Their knowledge and experience of babies taught us so much we actually bought some of the tools they used while we were there. The shusher for one.

On viewing the photos we were blown away, absolutely stunning. I even love the photos of me which I really didn't want to do but am so glad Georgina encouraged me to do. This is one of the best experiences we have ever had and would highly recommend for any parents with a newborn. In fact, we already have given the details to friends after seeing the photos. Many thanks to you both. Lots of love Rhianna, Phill and Grayson XXX”

Newborn Portraits in Summer Colours

I’ve been really busy at the Bundles of Joy Photography studio recently, taking photographs of many gorgeous little ones who have been born in the last few weeks.

With summer finally here, it’s been a real pleasure to dig out the summery coloured backdrops and wraps from my store room. I’ve been using them in my latest newborn portraits and some examples, I include here.

Don’t these late spring/early summer babies all look utterly gorgeous with these lovely seasonal colours?

Newborn portraits for your walls at home

A key thing to realise is that once you have had your newborn photo session with me, you’ll likely want to buy prints or framed products so that you can hang them on your walls at home.

Whether they are to be hung in your baby’s nursery or in your living areas, the photos look best if they complement your colour scheme.

Which is why, among other things, I always discuss with my clients to which colours they may want me to include in their baby’s newborn portraits.

Get inspiration from my newborn portrait galleries

I encourage all my clients to view my galleries to see examples of my work beforehand and to take note of any particular images that they love and would want for themselves. That way, you can tell me if there are any particular images or poses that you would like me to create during your own baby’s photoshoot.

Choosing colours for your newborn photoshoot

And I always discuss with parents what colours they would like me to use.

I have a HUGE collection of backdrops, props and accessories including wraps, so there are tonnes of options to choose from! But to save you from feeling overwhelmed, I like to discuss your preferred colours in advance – either let me know by email in advance, or we can chat about it on the morning of your photoshoot.

Then, once I’ve gathered all the most relevant coloured props and wraps, we can start creating the photographs as soon as your baby is settled and sleeping away peacefully.

Some parents have set ideas about the colours they want me to use. They may have a particular love of dusky pinks, creamy neutrals, soft yellows, baby blues, or fresh mint and greys. Whatever their preference, I can create images to suit.

Other parents are less specific and are happy for me to take photos using a variety of colour schemes. In this instance, I use the colours and combinations I know that work well and that has proved really popular with clients in the past.

Examples of my newborn portraits

So, what I hope you’ve taken from this blog today is that if you’re coming to me for a newborn shoot soon, do spend some time having a think about what colours would work well in your home.

The examples I’ve included in this blog hopefully have given you some inspiration on the colour combinations that are possible.

It really is worthwhile considering how the colours we use during your photoshoot could be tailored to complement your colour scheme or to match the season in which your baby has been born.

A bit of thought and pre-planning will help to give your newborn portraits the extra WOW factor!

See you at your photoshoot very soon!
